I’m amazed that they were trusting enough to just let you “go home and get the money”. That being said, if you don’t come up with the bail fees, in many states they may repudiate the bond, which will result in the court ordering you to be arrested and then held until the bond is paid. The bondsman you contacted before may then either refuse to do business with you, or may increase his fee.

If you don’t already have a lawyer, you should consider obtaining one. If you can’t afford one, the Court will appoint you a lawyer. If you’re in custody, you also have the right to a bail hearing. At that hearing you can ask for bail to be reduced, or your lawyer can. For a referral, contact your local or state bar association.

If the cops catch you then you will be going back to jail and will not have the opportunity to get back out until your sentence is up. You more than likely have a bench warrant, which is a warrant that is issued by the judge in your county to arrest you and bring you in.
