The bail bondsman puts up security up to a certain dollar amount and can then bail anyone up to that amount. So you put up $5k and he promises the court that if you jump he’ll pay the rest. Assuming you don’t jump bail you’ll have to pay him a commission based on how much he put up for you and you get your $5k back (minus commission).
If the bail is set at $50,000, a bail bondsman can put up a promise to pay the whole amount for a ten percent fee. When the accused shows up for court, the bond is rescinded and the ten percent stays with the bail bondsman. If the accused does not come to court, the bondsman must pay the full $50,000 and will be chasing down any possibility to find the accused. This is the whole premise of the TV show “Dog, The Bounty Hunter”. He tracks down and turns in people who jump bail.
When you are set a bond and someone pays to get you out of jail, you are out on bond, bail is the money paid for the bond, If bail is 50,000, most bails bonds men will take $5,000 from you and they pay the rest. You will lose your money regardless, unless you put up property (car, house, etc.), but the bails bondsmen get his money back unless the one who is out on bond does not show up for court, then you have to pay the $50,000 or lose your property, because the court does not give the money back to the bails bondmen when they don’t have the bonded prisoner. That why they have bounty hunters, because they bonded these people and they skipped town. So $5,000 would be all you pay unless the person bonded does not show up for court and leaves town.
